Page 9 - big friday
P. 9
Preface‫‏‬

‫‏‬The Friday That Changed Destiny is a reader that offers some 50 sources dealing with
the events of that fateful Friday when the State of Israel declared its independence.
The events described here took place at the Tel Aviv Museum, where the declaration
ceremony was held, as well as in other places. Separate chapters are devoted to the
process leading up to the declaration, and the first day of the independent state.
‫‏‬In addition, the book also includes the curriculum vitae of the 37 signatories on
the Declaration of Independence and their memories of the signing ceremony. The
ceremony and the events that followed it influenced the lives of many Israelis, young
and old, and attention is given to this impact, too.
‫‏‬While most of the material is based on documentary and literary sources, there are
also some chapters that were written especially for this book. Chapter 6 includes
analyses by two leading legal experts on the place of the Declaration of Independence
within Israel's overall constitutional infrastructure.
‫‏‬The material makes liberal use of direct quotes, including statements and opinions
expressed during the earliest years of the state, when not every detail was known, or
able to be exposed. For this reason there are certain discrepancies or contradictions
among different sources. There are also instances of overlap, or views of the same
event from more than one perspective.
‫‏‬The work as a whole, we believe, offers the contemporary reader an exceptionally
broad range of memories, views, estimations, and insights into the most important
day in Israel's history – the day it came into existence.
T‫ ‏‬he material is supported by photographs and documents from and related to the
signing ceremony, from Tel Aviv and elsewhere in the country. Efforts have been
made to include photographic material that has not been published to date, or that
has appeared previously but is little-known.
I‫‏‬ndependence Hall in Tel Aviv is about to undergo renovation, and within a few years
it will become a national center that will tell the story of a state that was born in
the tumult of war and grew into what it has become today. The publication of this
book by Yehuda Dekel Library, on behalf of the Society for the Preservation of Israel
Heritage Sites and Independence Hall, signals the start of this significant process.
