to promote their proper preservation.
Engineering Track – Design, implementation and supervision of subsequent
preservation activities.
Educational Track – Primarily promoting activities within the educational system
aimed at instilling the preservation concept.
The unwavering, ongoing and prolonged efforts by the Society for the Preservation
of Israel Heritage Sites staff, supporters and friends, have resulted in a process
the signs of which can be recognized everywhere. In lively cities one can again
observe architectural treasures that were not long ago on the brink of collapse, but
are now coming back to life. Exciting and inspiring visitor sites have been created
in agricultural settlements that still bear marks of decades of aging, recovery and
heroism.
In open fields surrounding forgotten sites, veils of neglect have suddenly been
lifted and glory has been restored. Forgotten remnants that tell of heartrending
stories are revealed along roadsides, and fascinating machines that had become
unwanted junk have been returned to service. Indeed the value of preservation
has become a principal component in planning in Israel, and its economy, culture
and education.
And yes, there were also more than a few failures: struggles that proved fruitless,
buildings that collapsed before their time, and hoped for preservations plan that
could never be realized.
This book seeks to turn the spotlight onto some of the many achievements of
an organization whose everyday work is of necessity always performed under
pressure and fervency, for as is well known, the passage of time does not favor old
structures, and thus, we must hurry.
Before it is too late...
