Abstract‫‏‬

‫‏‬On the ascent to Safed (Zefat) from the hamlet of Meron, two stone buildings stand out on
the city skyline: the historic hospital built by the London Society for Promoting Christianity
Amongst the Jews (henceforth: the London Society), later to become the Yossef Bussel rest
and recuperation (henceforth: R and R) home, or 'Beith Bussel'; and the historic Rothschild-
Hadassah hospital building. The story of these two historical buildings, now part of Zefat
Academic College, tells of the development of modern medicine in the Galilee. This book
relates the fascinating story of the historical interaction between the two buildings, while
revealing episodes in the story of mid-nineteenth century Safed.
