Police log
D‫ ‏‬espite the generally festive atmosphere, criminals did not cease their activities,
and the Tel Aviv police log records quite a few incidents, including the following:
-‫ ‏‬Over the course of the weekend some 15 cars were stolen. Not all of them were recovered.
- One of the stolen cars belonged to the American radio host Arthur Holzman, who, after

completing a broadcast about the proclamation ceremony for his radio station in New
York, discovered that his red car was gone.
-‫ ‏‬Jewelry to the value of 600 pounds was stolen from the apartment of Aryeh Leibowitz
in King Geoge Street. (In today's terms, the loot would be worth tens of thousands of
shekels.)
‫‏‬There were also police reports of road accidents. In one of them, which took place near
the Mograbi cinema, Moshe Novomeysky, CEO of Palestine Potash Limited, was injured.
He had come to Tel Aviv to reach an agreement with Ben-Gurion concerning continued
operation of the factory within territory under the control of the Arab Legion. A motorbike
struck him and broke his leg. The meeting with Ben-Gurion was cancelled.
T‫ ‏‬he police also organized itself in anticipation of the imminent emergency period. First
and foremost, there was close supervision of blackout orders, with the help of Civil Guard
inspectors.
