Another small notice
announced, “Mandate over.”
T‫ ‏‬he Yiddish Unzer Vort (Our
Word), published in Paris,
for some reason chose as its
main headline, “National
Council announces today
establishment of the Jewish
State.” Another headline, no
less strange, informs readers
that “Today, British evacuate
entire territory between
Nahariya and Tel Aviv.”

D‫ ‏‬as Neye Leben (New
Life), the organ of the Central
Committee of Polish Jewry
in Warsaw, announced, “The
Jewish State is declared.”
The sub-headline expresses
the wish, “Long live the
Jewish State, Israel!” In
Poland, which was already
under Communist rule, the
Jews permitted themselves
more than the Jews of the Soviet Union of 1948 were able to. The headline of the sole
Jewish newspaper there, Einikeit (Unity), declared, “Jewish State established in Palestine”.
(Another Yiddish paper was published in far-away Birobidzhan.) The newspaper editors
were warned not to place the announcement on the front page; it was relegated to one of
the inner pages.

T‫ ‏‬he same mood was evident in other newspapers: The headline of Unzer Veg (Our
Way), the “General Newspaper of German Jewry”, whose readership consisted of German
Jewish refugees, proclaimed in Hebrew: “Hebrew State lives!” Der Yiddishe Zeitung,
published in Argentina, announced, “Israel – new state among the family of nations,”
while in Chile the publication Das Yiddische Vort (The Jewish Word) expressed the wish,
“Long live the new Jewish State!”, with the Israeli flag and a picture of Herzl occupying
the entire front page. See the front page of Das Yiddische Vort newspaper on this page.
