T he Hagana leadership
at the Declaration Ceremony
Y osef Avidar (Rochel)
Representatives of the Hagana [the main Jewish military force, soon to become the
Israel Defense Force], attended the official ceremony of the declaration of our
independence, which took place in the hall of the Tel Aviv Museum: Chief of Staff Yaakov
Dori; Head of the General Staff Headquarters, Yigael Yadin; and myself, head of General
Staff –Logistics Directorate. A special atmosphere pervaded the hall; the word "festive" does
not quite capture it; the festivity was darkened by a feeling of tremendous responsibility
Two members of the Hagana senior command in 1948: Yosef Avidar,
head of Logistics Branch, at right, and Yitzhak Sadeh, head of Armored
Vehicles Service, at left
