text of the declaration on the parchment. The Chief Rabbinate recommended a
religious scribe; he commenced work, but the attempt did not work out well, and
ultimately Wallisch and his assistant, Rudolph Sidner, carried out the delicate work
themselves. It was necessary to decide on a font for the script, and the spelling
policy. They chose from an ancient Torah scroll a Sephardic-style script with the
virtue of being both pleasant and easy to read. Emphases took the form of an
enlarged letter at the start of each paragraph. The entire operation, including the
sewing together of the three sections of the scroll, took weeks. There was no state
stamp, so two religious scribes created a stamp in the form of a Star of David.
D uring the first lull in the fighting the mission was completed. Wallisch had a
wooden cover made, and he presented the Scroll of Independence to Zeev Sharef,
Cabinet Secretary.
