Page 88 - big friday
P. 88
T‫ ‏‬he Scroll is signed by representatives of all ethnic
groups, from Yemen and the oriental communities,
as well as by representatives of the women – Mrs.
Kagan and Golda Meyerson, and their signing is
received with applause, as a sign that women, too,
have a part in the Founding Charter of the State of
Israel.

S‫ ‏‬orrow is expressed over the fact that the
representatives from Jerusalem did not attend.
T‫ ‏‬he nimble hands of the journalists take notes, and
the photographers are constantly snapping pictures.
‫‏‬The entire ceremony lasts a half hour, and concludes
with HaTikva played by the Philharmonic
Orchestra.

‫‏‬The conductor is Yosef Kaminsky, the son of
Ester Rachel Kaminsky. He cannot contain his
emotion over conducting the anthem upon the
establishment of the State of Israel.
‫‏‬People shake hands and congratulate each other:
"Wishing us well"; "May it be a good state"; even
the veterans, the participants of the First Zionist
Congress, restrain themselves. Only one brave
individual is witnessed in "disgrace" - Golda Meyerson is overcome with emotion, tears
streaming. May God forgive her. And may the Yishuv forgive her for this emotion. In the
goblet of the nation's tears, her weeping at this moment will merge with the weeping of Rabbi
Fishman as he recited the "Shehehiyanu".
O‫ ‏‬n the street
‫‏‬A crowd is gathered on Rothschild Boulevard, near the museum.
‫‏‬The flags tied to the trees, which were planted on this road named for the "Generous Benefactor"
in the early days of Tel Aviv, offer some shade. It is possible that those assembled have also
committed the crime of stepping on the grass (they should be forgiven, on this occasion, for
not obeying the law).
‫‏‬Children climb the trees and look down, chirping just like the birds.
S‫ ‏‬uddenly there is noise passing through the crowd. An eruption of applause. The crowd
has just shown its appreciation for Moshe Shertok, who served the nation at Lake Success.
‫‏‬The military police intervenes, helping him into his car, and policemen mounted on growling
motorbikes escort him in front and at the rear.
‫‏‬He now looks like a very important prisoner, with the military police protecting him from
outbursts of affection.
