HaTzofeh, May 14, 1948
T his is the day
It is a great day; a colossal date in Jewish history.
T his day is the last day of foreign rule in the Land of Israel, and the last day of Jewish
exile among the nations; the end to dispersion in the Diaspora with no homeland and no
rest. On this Sabbath eve the dream of the generation will come true: with God's help, the
Jewish state will be founded and established in the renewed homeland…
Today we have become an independent nation in our homeland. From this day onwards
we are all the army of the Hebrew nation, fighting for our liberty and for the fortification
of our state.
A l HaMishmar, May 14, 1948
End of the Mandate
Our generation has been fated to "live history". And today is one of the days when its
heavy footsteps are audible. Today sees the end of the British Mandatory regime that made
its mark on the entire way things have happened in this country for almost 30 years…
W e will be ready for the steps to come. The bells of history are ringing. The hand of fate is
knocking on our doors.
Palestine Post, May 14, 1948
1918-1948
A time will come when Palestine's people will be able to drag their feet out of the
trenches and raise their eyes to the peaks. When that time comes, the closing today of the
Government House door on Britain's last High Commissioner will be seen as the sealing
of a chapter in history […].
M ivrak, May 14, 1948
The State of Israel's War
It is good that the celebration today in our streets is not as it was on that eve of celebration
on November 29, the eve of the great lie. The lie that someone, through his vote, would
give us a state, and then defend his vote with his armies.
And it is good that the celebration is restrained and serious, as our liberty is exceedingly
restrained; as the battle is exceedingly serious.
