T‫ ‏‬ens of thousands glued to the Voice of Israel
T‫ ‏‬he proclamation ceremony was carried on Voice of Israel radio, thus commencing the
State of Israel's radio broadcasts. Tens of thousands were glued to their radios throughout
the proclamation. Special speakers were set up at coffee shops, and all the passersby
listened very intently to what was being said. There were many public eruptions of joy,
although great restraint was discernible in these expressions of joy. Many people wished
each other 'mazal tov'. Parents explained to their children the importance of the occasion
and the solemnity of the hour.

‫‏‬On Shabbat eve many people celebrated the declaration of independence, although
the celebrations did not take the form of a public outburst like the demonstrations of the
eve of the UN Assembly decision. The semi-black-out over the city added its own special
contribution to the great event.

T‫ ‏‬he streets of Tel Aviv were quiet – quieter than usual. But the festive atmosphere could
be felt in this quiet. Soon the subdued quiet was broken by a tremendous display of joy that
