(59). B orn in Poland, moved to the US at a young age. A rabbi
and a leader of the national-religious Mizrahi movement. Head of
Mizrahi in the US, and later head of World Mizrahi. Immigrated
in 1924 and for decades divided his time between Israel and the
US. From 1945 he was a member of the Jewish Agency executive.
Member of the Provisional State Council. After the establishment
of the state, he served in senior positions in the Jewish Agency. Died in 1956.
Meir Grabovski
(43). Hebrew family name: Argov. Born in Ukraine and a leader
of HeHalutz there. Immigrated in 1925 and represented the
workers in the institutions of Petach Tikva. An activist in the
HaPo'el HaTza'ir and Mapai parties. In 1940 he volunteered for
the British army, and after the war participated in operations to
rescue Holocaust survivors in Europe and bring them to Palestine.
Member of the Provisional State Council. Member of the 1st-5th Knesset, and served
as chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. Died in 1963.
Yitzhak Gruenbaum
(69). B orn in Poland, and served for years as the representative of
Polish Jewry in the Sejm (Polish parliament). Immigrated in 1933
and assumed the position of Head of Aliya Department at the
Jewish Agency. Between 1935-1946 served as head of the Labor
Department at the Jewish Agency. Member of the Provisional
State Council and Minister of the Interior in the Provisional Government. Over the
next two decades he wrote prolifically: books, essays, and newspaper articles. Died
in 1970.
Avraham Granovsky
(58). Hebrew family name: Granot. Born in Bessarabia (southern
Russia). Studied at universities in Switzerland, awarded degrees in
law and economics. Immigrated in 1922 and held senior positions
in the JNF: From 1934 he served as General Secretary, and from
1945 as Chairman of the Board. Member of the Provisional State
Council and a member of the 1st-2nd Knesset, representing the Progressive Party.
Died in 1962.
