(54). Born in Romania. Zionist activist from his youth. Joined the
Revisionist movement and was involved inter alia in organizing illegal
immigration to the Land of Israel. Immigrated in 1940. Arrested by
the British and imprisoned in Latrun. Member of the Provisional
State Council. After the establishment of the state he engaged in
governmental and non-governmental economic activity. Died in 1962.
Moshe Shapira
(46). B orn in Poland. Active in religious parties and organizations from
his youth. Immigrated in 1926. Head of the HaPo'el HaMizrahi Party,
which he represented in important roles at the Zionist Congresses and
in the Jewish Agency executive. Headed the Jewish Agency's Aliya
department. Member of the Provisional State Council and Minister
of Aliya and Health in the provisional government. Leader of the
Mafdal (National Religious Party) and member of the 1st-7th Knesset.
During the years 1949-1970 he held the following government portfolios: Interior, Aliya,
Religions, Health, Welfare. Died in 1970.
M oshe Sharett
(56). Previous family name: Shertok. A leader of the Workers'
Movement and Mapai. Born in Ukraine to a family affiliated with the
Bilu movement which immigrated in the First Aliya. Immigrated at
the age of 12. Member of the first graduating class of the Herzliya
Gymnasium. Officer in the Turkish army during the First World War.
Studied at the London School of Economics; joined the editorial board
of Davar upon its establishment. Six years later he was invited to work
with the head of the political department of the Jewish Agency, Dr. Haim Arlozoroff.
Following the murder of Arlozoroff, Shertok served as head of the political department
for 15 years (1933-1948). He contributed greatly to the achievement of the UN Partition
Plan resolution on November 29, 1947. Foreign minister in the Provisional Government,
as well as in all the governments that he served in, between 1949-1965. During the years
1954-1955 he served as Prime Minister. Member of the 1st-5th Knesset. Died in 1965.
